Only a 45-minute drive south of Charleston, Edisto Island was first inhabited by the Edistow Indians around 4,000 years ago. Before the Civil War, the Edisto's Golden Age was highlighted by the island's wealthy fortune from a flourishing cotton industry. Today, other cotton fields remain havens for vegetables, melons, and other crops. Edisto Island was commercially developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Through the years, Edisto Island has become one of the very few exotic destinations where nature has not been tarnished and taken for granted. It continues to preserve its rich flora, fauna, and historical avenues.
