Battery Warren This Civil War defense site was active from December 1862 to November 1864. The Confederate gun emplacement was in an L-shape behind seven earth mounds on a bluff overlooking the Santee River
Hwy 17 north to Rutledge Rd. 8.6 miles west on Rutledge Road to Echaw A. Turn right and go about 1 mile to the parking area.
Buck Hall Recreation area
5 miles south of McClellanville off Highway 17. Access to the Intracoastal Waterway. Camp sites with picnic tables, fire rings, lantern posts, electric hookups; water spigots are centrally located. Bathhouse with warm water showers, flush toilets. Motor home dump station.
Year-round. Very busy from September to November during shrimp-baiting season.

Bulls Island
This island within the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is accessible by ferry boats leaving from Moore's Landing. .

Camp Seewee
Eight one week sessions throughout the summer for 8- to 14-year old boys and girls sponsored by Clemson University's Youth Learning Institute.

Cape Romain Lighthouses
The new and old lighthouses, both built in the 1800's, are accessible only by water. In clear weather, they are visible from the foot of Pinckney Street in McClellanville. For the last two years, community picnics at the lighthouses have been organized by the Village Museum. Lighthouse carvings and gifts are available from the Lighthouse Shop at 825 Pinckney Street.

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge
65,000 acres of pristine barrier islands and estuaries.

Elmwood Recreation Area
Rustic camp, no fees, spigot water and vault toilets. A popular camp during deer and turkey hunting seasons. Serves as SC Dept. of Natural Resources game check station during big-game hunting season.
From the blinking caution light, take Hwy. 17 North for approximately 6 miles to Rutledge Rd. Turn left onto Rutledge Rd. and drive 4 miles to site.
Francis Marion National Forest and Palmetto Trail
250,000 acres. Hiking, horseback riding, biking, canoeing, kayaking, camping.

Guilliard Lake Recreation Area
Primitive boat landing and access to the 5-acre Guilliard Lake located on the bluff of an oxbow on the Santee River. Floodplain forest of baldcypress, tupelo, sweetgum and sycamore. Boat landing, vault toilet, picnic tables, grills. No fees.
From the yellow caution light, take Hwy 45 seventeen miles to Guilliard Lake Road (F.S. Road 150). Turn right and drive 2 miles to F.S. Road 150-G. Turn left and continue 1 mile to the recreation area.
Hampton Plantation State Park
Plantation tours, nature trail, picnic area.

Honey Hill Recreation Area
Primitive camping facility. Short loop walk through upland pine/oak forest to fire lookout tower. Facilities available are hand-pump water, vault toilet, picnic tables, grills. No fees.
Take Hwy 45 from blinking caution light, eight miles to the camp.
Hopsewee Plantation (circa 1739)
Hwy 17 north of South Santee bridge. Open to public. Hours vary.

Jericho Horse/Hiking Trail
19 mile loop trail. 6 hours by horseback. The trail follows an old railroad logging tram through a variety of habitats. Recommended for Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Moore's Landing

Robert E. Ashley Boat Landing
Foot of Pinckney Street next to McClellanville Town Hall. Access to Jeremy Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway. Permit required and available from McClellanville Town Hall during business hours. Boat landing open 24 hours.
St. James Santee Parish Church
Built c. 1768, this is the third church of the parish. It is also known as the Old Brick Church or Wambaw Church. The St. James Santee Parish was settled primarily by French Huguenots. By the time it was incorporated into the Church of England in 1706, there were 100 French and 60 English families in the area.
The Church is open to the public and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is located 2.2 miles south of Rutledge Rd. on the Old Georgetown Rd.
Santee Coastal Reserve - Washo Reserve
24,000 acres. Swamp boardwalk, hiking, biking and canoeing.

Seewee Shell Mounds
One of the oldest archaeological sites on the South Atlantic Seacoast. From Hwy 17, east on Doar Rd. to Salt Pond Rd. A Forest Service trail on Salt Pond Rd. leads to a clam shell mound left by native Americans 1,000 years ago and to an oyster shell ring dating to around 2000 BC. Guided tours available from Nature Adventures Outfitters (above).
Seewee Visitor & Environmental Education Center
15 miles south of McClellanville on Hwy 17. Exhibits, films, interpretive programs, live red wolf exhibit. (843) 928-3368.
Swamp Fox National Recreation Trail
Part of the cross-state hiking and mountain biking Palmetto Trail. When completed the trail will run from the McClellanville/Awendaw area on the coast to Oconee State Park in the Upcountry. The section of the trail in this area was constructed in 1968 by the Boy Scouts. There are primitive campsites along the trail and the Halfway Creek Trail Campground 6 miles from Hwy 17 off Steedcreek Road.
