Effectively immediately, Charleston City Council reduced the allowable height of new commercial buildings located outside of the historic downtown Charleston area. Although there are exceptions, the new height limit is 55 feet. The old “3X rule†allowed buildings to be as tall as three times the distance from the edge of the building to the center line of the adjacent road.
