The South Carolina Arts Commission has given a $14,319 grant to the town of Mount Pleasant to assist in building a sweetgrass basket pavilion at the new Memorial Waterfront Park. According to Mayor Harry Hallman Jr, sweetgrass basket weaving has been part of Mount Pleasant’s community for more than 300 years. The tradition has been passed down from generation to generation.
Sweetgrass basket-making is the official handcraft of the state of South Carolina.
