The Lowcountry is a large area and depending on the location of the property, homeowners must abide by the rules of the city, town and/or county. It is important to ask before you take down a tree or begin to build in regard to removing trees.
Charleston County also has an ordinance protecting trees 24 inches or more in diameter in residential areas. In commercial zones, any tree 8 inches in diameter is protected. Trees are protected in buildable zones and setback areas also.
The city of Charleston has about 50,000 public trees and about 30 percent are oak trees. The city also has palmettos, crepe myrtles, sycamore and pine.
