The Charleston area is blessed with so many natural endowments; and with 234 days of sunshine a year, you’ll have to take advantage of some of these activities.

Beaches: The 91 miles of Charleston coastline offers plenty of public beach front for swimming, surfing, fishing and sunning. The Charleston area public beaches include:

Parks: The Charleston area has more than 50 public parks for you to enjoy. From the Francis Marion National Forest that spans 1000s of acres to the Charleston Waterfront Park which offers picnic areas, park benches and spectacular views of the harbor…you have a lot to select from.

Fresh-Water Fishing: Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie (man-made lakes spanning 110,000 acres of land in five South Carolina counties) are the home of the Annual Striper Rodeo and the Land Locked Striped Bass. For an updated list of rules and regulations pertaining to fresh-water fishing, please visit: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/fishing.html

Deep-Sea Fishing: The world famous blackfish banks off Charleston Harbor are accessible for deep-sea enthusiasts via charter and head boats. The Gulf Stream is approximately 60 miles off the coast.  A popular website concerning Charleston fishing is:  http://www.charlestonfishing.com/

In-Shore Fishing: The backwaters of the lowcountry provide opportunity to catch redfish (red drum), trout, flounder, bluefish, snapper, and bass.

Boating:  Boating is extremely popular here in the Lowcountry. Be sure to check out South Carolina’s Department of Resources website regarding title and registration of your watercraft (http://www.dnr.sc.gov/boating.html).  Below please find a list of marinas in the Charleston area:

Charleston County Parks & Recreation Commission offers 19 public boat landings.

Some of the ramps are more suitable for kayaks and canoes and I have indicated this by placing an asterisk (*) next to the landing.

Directions to the Boat Landings:

BULOW: West Ashley, take US 17 south, turn right on Davison Rd, turn right on Bulow Landing Rd. Bulow Landing is a dirt road and may be impassable at times due to standing water. Water Body: Rantowles Creek   Map No: 8CHERRY POINT: Wadmalaw Island near Rockville. Take Maybank Hwy; turn left on Cherry Point Rd, which leads to the landing. Water Body: Bohicket Creek   Map No: 7

COUNTY FARM: Take Leeds Ave to Division Rd to Bridgeview Dr (near Duncans Boat Harbor where Mark Clark Expressway crosses Ashley River into North Charleston). Water Body: Ashley River   Map No: 11

DAWHO:  Take Highway 174 to new bridge across Dawho River. Landing is at the foot of the bridge. Water Body: Dawho River

GADSONVILLE*: Take US 17 North, take a right onto Gadsonville Rd (Awendaw Fire Station is on the left). The landing is at the end of the causeway. No water at low tide. Limited parking. Water Body: Copahee Sound   Map No: 19

LIMEHOUSE: Off Main Rd, just as you enter John’s Island from West Ashley at Limehouse Bridge. Water Body: Stono River Map No:9MARTINS: Take Parkers Ferry Rd to the right off of US 17 South. Turn left on Martins Landing Rd that leads to the landing. Water Body: Edisto River   Map No: 1

PARADISE*:  Turn left onto Chandler Rd off US 17 North. Boat landing is at the end of the road. Water Body: Upper Wando River

PIERPONT*: West Ashley down Highway 61 North, turn right on Parsonage Rd. The landing is at the end of the road. Small landing. Water Body: Church Creek (off the Ashley River)   Map No: 10

RIVER TERRACE/PLYMOUTH LANDING: Enter Wappoo Drive in Riverland Terrace subdivision off Maybank Highway and turn right on to Plymouth Street. Landing is at the end of Plymouth Street. Water Body: Wappoo Creek   Map No: 12

REMLEYS POINT:  Mount Pleasant- off Mathis Ferry Road near Hobcaw Point and Molasses Creek subdivision. Take 5th Avenue to 3rd Street to 3rd Avenue to 2nd Street to 5th Avenue. Large Landing. Water Body: Wando River   Map No: 16

SHEM CREEK: Turn left off Coleman Blvd in Mt Pleasant onto Mill St Landing is at the end of Mill St. Water Body: Shem Creek Map No: 17

SOL LEGARE/BATTERY ISLAND: Turn right off Folly Road onto Sol Legare Rd go to end. Small landing. Water Body: Stono River   Map No: 14

STEAMBOAT:  Edisto Island. Take SteamBoat Landing Road, 968, off Highway 174 (near James Edwards School). Small landing. Water Body: Steamboat Creek   Map No: 5

TOOGOODOO: Take US 17 South turn left onto Highway 162 and go through Hollywood to Highway 636. 636 leads to landing. Water Body: Upper Toogoodoo Creek   Map No: 6

WAPPOO CUT: Off Folly Road at bridge before James Island. Water Body: Wappoo Creek   Map No: 13

WILLTOWN BLUFF*:  Take a left onto 174 from US 17 South to road 55 (Wiltown Rd) which leads to the landing. Or take a left on Parkers Ferry Rd (38) off US 17 South to Willtown Rd. Water Body: Edisto River   Map No: 3
